The problem

Online converters make you upload your files, wait in a queue, then download them again. Orange converts them on your Mac, next to the original, in a second.

Key benefits

Smarter file conversion

One gesture

Drag, tap Shift, release. No windows to open, no menus to dig through.

Private by design

Every conversion runs on your Mac. Nothing is uploaded, ever.

Batches, too

Drop a dozen files on the wheel and they all convert together.

Features

Built for the way you work. Out of the way until you need it.

Release to convert

The wheel opens under your pointer. Let go over a format and you’re done.

Keyboard first

Arrow keys, Return, or number keys 1–9 pick a format without the mouse.

Haptic feedback

Your trackpad ticks as you cross each format, so you feel the selection.

FAQs

Got questions? Here are the answers.

Is Orange really free?

Yes. Orange is free and open source under the MIT licence. There’s no trial, no account and no paid tier.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Every conversion runs on your Mac using macOS frameworks or helpers installed on your Mac. Orange never sends your files over the network.

Which formats does it support?

Images, audio, video, PDF, documents, slides, spreadsheets, subtitles and archives — 55 input types in all. The formats section above lists each one.

Why does Orange ask for Accessibility access?

Only so it can see the Space and Esc keys while you’re dragging. The default Shift trigger and Option work without it, so you can skip the prompt.

Do I need ffmpeg or LibreOffice?

Not to start. Images, PDFs, documents, MP4, MOV, M4A and WAV are converted by macOS itself. ffmpeg adds MP3, OGG, WebM, MKV and more; LibreOffice adds PowerPoint and ODS. Settings shows what’s installed.

macOS says Orange can’t be checked for malware.

Orange isn’t notarised by Apple yet. Right-click Orange in Applications, choose Open, then Open again. You only need to do this once.

How do updates work?

Orange checks GitHub releases once a day. Updates are signed, and Orange checks the signature before installing. You can also choose Check for Updates… from the menu.

Does it run on Intel Macs?

Yes. Orange is a universal app for Apple silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 13 Ventura or later.
